Literally engaged in spreading light and fragrance in the dog-eat-dog world of business, Popular Candles is also an example of how women power can work magic in the field of entrepreneurship. Led by four sisters – Sheeba Babu, Sherly Jose, Jee Joy and Liny Baiju, the Kochi-based designer candle manufacturing company stands as a testimony to their sheer grit and hard work.
“Popular began as a small-scale candle manufacturing unit with just five workers in the 1960s. Now we have 150 employees and we are a popular brand in South India,” says Abi Mathew, the manager.
The company was founded by P P Joseph, who handed over the proprietorship to his four daughters, who now manages the company. The products include candles for household use, gel candles, handmade candles, special occasion candles, festival candles, tealights, dinner candles and scented and designer candles, apart from customized candles, made and delivered as per demand.
“We have a design team, research and development team and a testing facility to keep a tab on the quality of raw materials, process parameters and the output. Currently, we are based at Edappally and a new plant worth Rs. 3 crore is being set up. We have also acquired space at the industrial area at Kalamassery, to set up another plant to cater to our export market,” Abi adds.
Now, one of the leading designer candle manufacturers with customers across India and with export to the UK for the past five years, Popular Candles is also in the process of tapping the global market further. The company has also won several entrepreneur awards, including the Kerala State award for Best Entrepreneur in Ernakulam district and Destination Kerala SME Excellence Award 2019
“Staying updated, following statutory regulations and adapting to changes are very important in business. We always make it a point to strictly abide by rules and regulations. Hence, we didn’t face any difficulty during the transition stage from VAT to GST,” he says.
The company’s next big plan is to concentrate on exports to the US and UK, which together have a huge market for candles. In the next five years, Popular will go places and help ‘spread the light’.
