The month of May was an unpleasant one for Kerala, especially northern Kerala which witnessed the fatal Nipah outbreak. The panic it created was so severe that Kozhikode city wore a deserted look for a couple of days especially after the death of nurse Lini Puthussery of Perambra taluk hospital in the district. The fact that it was from the patient(s) that the nurse got infected and the thought of introducing a robot for interacting with  patients prompted a group of techies working with UST Global to come out with the award-winning short film ‘Genesis: The Walk Begins’.

The film, which won third place in the short film festival conducted by UST Global, is based on the theme of harnessing the power of advanced technology for containing epidemic outbreaks. The short film is the first venture of the five-member team of like-minded movie enthusiasts who have recently launched a film house named ‘Dreamz-On-Reelz Moviecrafts’.

“During the short film festival conducted by UST Global in June, we wanted to screen a film involving robots and holograms. We developed the thread of the story from the reports being carried by newspapers then,” said Kiran Kalathil, the director of the film and Database Administrator at UST Global.

After doing comprehensive research in the field of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence (AI), the team developed the storyline in which a patient, named Ram, is being treated by a robot remotely controlled by a doctor. ASIMOV Robotics Pvt. Ltd. in Kochi provided the robot for the shooting purpose.

“Since this was a sensitive subject, getting locations, especially the scenes that needed to be shot in hospitals was a major challenge,” adds Kiran. He also recalls how UST Global had provided all the necessary arrangements for the shoot.

The techies who portrayed the characters in the 10-minute film are Rashid Nazarudeen, Anup Sreedhar, Shanu Shaji, Rahul Rema, Sidhini Brinda, Sasmita Sahu and Sneha Antony.

Genesis’ is slated for screening at multiple international short film festivals, including Filmingo International Short Film Festival and Velvet International Film Festival. The short film will be released through the Facebook page of ‘Angamaly Diaries’ fame Antony Varghese and after that it will be available on YouTube.

Besides directing short films, Kiran has also donned the hat of a music director for many short films.

‘Dreamz-On-Reelz Moviecrafts’ also has other projects in the pipeline.
